NATURAL DYE WORKSHOP WITH SAYDE LAINE ANDERSON

  • Little Sparrow Farm 3120 Mount Sinai Road Durham, NC, 27705 United States (map)

In this workshop, we will explore the process of natural dyeing on plant fibers. We will work with locally grown dye plants from the Reality farm to create a range of colors on cotton and linen. This is a sustainable practice that is perfect for quilters, knitters, weavers, garment makers and anyone interested in deepening their relationship with the natural world through craft. Throughout the three hours together we will dive into how to prepare your fabric for natural dye, extract color from plants and cure your fiber for a colorfast life. After you sign up you will receive an email with what to bring for the workshop. Join us for a good time out at Little Sparrow Farm as we experiment with natural dyes!

Cost of the workshop is $75. Workshop will include some tasty treats, including cheese from BoxCarr Farm and cured meats from Bell Farm, along with a spring beverage. You will also have the option to pick your own flower bouquet. Please contact Katy at connect@littlesparowfarm.com for more details.

About your teacher:

My work is very experimental, I am curious to see what plants or materials could extract a natural colorfast dye. In my own practice of working with plant-based color, I forage for and I am beginning to grow dye plants in my yard and with the Reality farm. As often as I use whole plants rather than extracts, I am becoming more aware of their seasonal availability, growth cycles and color potential. This is the beauty of natural color, a seasonal palette for each season!

I hope through this workshop you grow a deeper attention for the natural beauty each season brings, an attentiveness with yourself and inspiration for what to do with that wayward linen shirt you haven’t worn in awhile.
